The drive from San Francisco to Los Angeles (or vice versa) is high on a lot of people’s bucket lists, and quite rightly so. A road that could be done in 10 hours, but is meant to be traversed slowly, as you enjoy the beautiful coastline, towering trees, expansive beaches and abundant wildlife.

CALIFORNIA’S STUNNING COASTLINE

A classic Pacific Coast Highway road trip starts off in San Francisco, where you can enjoy the iconic Golden Gate Bridge, experience Alcatraz Prison and the lively Pier 39.

Head south past the coastal town of Santa Cruz and into the charming fishing village of Monterey where you can go whale-watching in Monterey Bay (one of our Top 10 Animal encounters). This is where the official PCH route starts – first stop is the chic village of Carmel-by-the-Sea; keen golfers can check out 17-Mile Drive; home to a number of fabulous courses, including picturesque Pebble Beach.

As you move your way further south, you enter Big Sur, a stunning stretch of road that offers plenty of stop-offs and vistas to admire, as you wind around the rugged coastlines and through glorious pinewood forests. Iconic Bixby Bridge is a definite must-stop location!

Next is the pretty hillside town of Cambria, home to the beautiful Hearst Castle with its magnificent views overlooking the Pacific Ocean. If you have time, take a short detour to the quirky, Danish-influenced town of Solvang.

Your final stop before you get to LA is the elegant town of Santa Barbara, with its Spanish influenced architecture and stunning stretch of coastline.

After a stop at the affluent and celeb-filled beachside town of Malibu, head into Santa Monica where you can visit the famous pier, cycle down to quirky Venice Beach or shop on 3^rd St. Promenade. This is a great base to explore the rest of what Los Angeles has to offer, including Hollywood, Beverly Hills and Orange County.

If you don’t want the journey to end in Los Angeles, you can always carry onto sunny San Diego, the desert oasis of Palm Springs or the “entertainment capital of the world”, Las Vegas.
