STRIKING LANDSCAPES, UNSPOILT BEACHES AND FABULOUS FOOD
Vietnam snakes in an S-shape along the South China sea, and it is big! The differences between the north and south are distinguishable, from the landscapes and climates to the cultures and cuisine.
Many tourists tend to kick start their Vietnam adventure with a visit to one of its vibrant cities. To the north, the country’s capital Hanoi - a dynamic city blended with eastern and western influences, from colonial architecture and tree-lined boulevards of the Diplomatic and French Quarters to the chaotic streets of the Old Quarter and its many bars, restaurants and food markets.
In the south, the city formally known as Saigon - Ho Chi Minh City is Vietnam’s largest metropolis where French colonial architecture mixes with modern skyscrapers. Amongst the seemingly chaotic whirl of motorbikes and scooters, are a number of bustling markets, fantastic restaurants and chic rooftop bars. The nearby Cu Chi Tunnels are a fantastic eye-opener in understanding how the Viet Cong fought during the Vietnam War. HCMC is also the perfect base to explore the mighty Mekong Delta – journey through the fertile waterways by boat, discovering stilted houses, floating markets and vivid green rice field along the way.
Spectacular Ha Long Bay is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a highlight of any trip to Vietnam! Take a luxurious overnight cruise around the limestone karsts that jut out from the calm, emerald waters. Fantastic dining and entertainment are also provided.
The enchanting riverside town of Hoi-An (also a UNESCO World Heritage site) sits in the centre of the country and is very accessible either by plane or overnight train. Nicknamed the ‘City of Lanterns’, it is packed with character and history, famous for its Chinese silk lanterns that hover over the narrow streets and shopfronts and is a fantastic place for a culinary adventure, eating your way through the country’s delicious cuisine.
No visit to Vietnam would be complete without some time to unwind on one of its irresistible beaches. The long coastline and offshore islands offer a mix of family-friendly oceanfront resorts and luxurious romantic retreats. Most of the beaches are in the southern half of the country where there is more of a tropical climate, from Hoi-An through the lively town of Nha Trang to the laidback shores of Mui Ne.
The island of Phu Quoc sits off the south-west coast in the Gulf of Thailand, boasting golden palm-fringed sands, tranquil waters and a growing number of luxury resorts. Just a short flight from Ho Chi Minh City; this is the perfect destination to create an unforgettable twin-centre holiday.
When in Vietnam, you must try the Bánh Mi, an incredibly delicious baguette stuffed with succulent pork, pate, mayonnaise, pickled vegetables and fresh herbs. There are stalls all over Vietnam selling them and are incredibly cheap (roughly 35p!). Bánh Mi Phuong in Hoi-An and Bánh Mi 37(a street food cart located down an HCMC alleyway) were our favourite establishments.
