cultural trips to laid-back laos
One of Asia’s gems, laid-back Laos is incredibly beautiful, culturally rich and genuinely welcoming. A traditional Buddhist way of life prevails throughout most of Laos, creating a uniquely relaxed atmosphere compared to its more frenetic neighbours, Thailand and Vietnam. Remnants of French colonial rule are still visible in certain parts here, with faded mansions, delicious bread and chilled coffee shops, but its exquisite temples, colourful hill tribes and dramatic mountainous landscapes have helped retain an authentic Laotian culture.

SIT BACK, RELAX AND WATCH LOCAL LIFE UNFOLD
Set at the confluence of the Nam Khan and Mekong Rivers, Luang Prabang is one of the jewels of Indochina. This UNESCO listed town boasts a host of gilded temples, charming colonial mansions, and a vibrant night market. Rise early to see the morning alms giving – a longstanding Buddhist tradition where local gather their daily meal from the local community – a fascinating spectacle. A little way out of town, you will find the stunningly turquoise waters of the Kuang Si Falls.
More of a large town, the enchanting capital Vientiane is home to wide boulevards, faded colonial architecture, riverside cafes, and picturesque temples including Pha That Luang (The Golden Temple), considered to be the most important temples in Laos.
Between Vientiane and Luang Prabang is the small town of Vang Vieng – an idyllic setting on the banks of the Nam Song River surrounded by vivid green paddy fields backed by jagged limestone rock formations. It is also great for anyone who is outdoor orientated, with a number of activities available, including cycling, rock climbing and kayaking.
We took a leisurely 2-day boat cruise from Thailand’s Golden Triangle to Luang Prabang. A beautiful river barge which winds its way down the Mekong with an overnight stop in the quaint rural village of Pak Beng. It was a memorable introduction to Laos.
Due to its location, Laos is perfect for a multi-centre holiday where you can combine a trip in neighbouring Cambodia, Thailand or Vietnam. Enquire today for an incredible trip to Indochina!
