CRUMBLING TEMPLES, BUZZING CITIES AND BLISSFUL BEACHES
Undoubtedly the biggest draw to Cambodia, Angkor Wat is arguably the most famous temple complex in the world and is no place better to channel your Indiana Jones, with crumbling temples enveloped by jungle vines and giant buddha statues. Visit the ancient temples of Ta Prohm, which is where Lara Croft: Tomb Raider was filmed.
The nearby town of Siem Reap is a great base to visit the temples, with a plethora of stylish hotels, fascinating markets and multiple dining options, from world-class restaurants to the delicious street food stalls. Don’t forget the fantastic nightlife on buzzing Pub Street.
To the south-west of the country, Cambodia has a number of stunning islands within the Gulf of Thailand. Take a boat from the fast-developing town of Sihanoukville to the sister islands of Koh Rong and Koh Rong Samloem, boasting powder-white sands, crystal clear waters and a number of five-star beach resorts. They are the perfect place to disconnect from daily life with a number of fantastic boat tours visiting the more secluded parts of the islands.
Back on the mainland and a short drive from Sihanoukville lie the charming towns of Kep and Kampot. Kep – a seaside retreat for the French elite in the 1960s was sadly destroyed at the hands of the Khmer Rouge but is now returning to its former glory with its relaxed ambience, delicious seafood and spectacular sunsets. The more inland Kampot is renowned for its colonial architecture and is a great base for exploring the historical Bokor Mountains.
Set along the banks of the mighty Mekong River, the nation’s capital Phnom Penh is a bustling city undergoing a modern renaissance, with a vibrant riverside promenade, gleaming royal palaces and excellent restaurants and bars. To understand Cambodia’s turbulent and dark past, a trip to Choeung EK Genocidal Center and Tuol Sleng (S21) Genocide Museum is an absolute must; sobering and thought-provoking reminders of the atrocities committed by the oppressive Khmer Rouge regime.
It’s difficult not to feel awe for the locals and reverence for the kind of joy and incredible hospitality they shower visitors with, which makes an unforgettable holiday to Cambodia, that bit more delightful.
Buy your temple tickets the afternoon before your visit – this actually includes access to the main complex that very evening to watch the sunset over the main temple. The following day - rise early for one of the most stunning sunrises you will ever see.
Cambodia makes for an excellent twin-centre holiday, mixing enchanting cities with decadent beach escapes. Enquire now to get your adventure started!
