Few cities can compare with the beauty of Rio de Janeiro. Nestled between forest-clad mountains and sweeping beaches, the lively city plays host to world-famous sites such as the imperious Sugarloaf Mountain, glamourous Copacabana Beach and the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue (a modern Wonder of the World – check out our dedicated page for more information).
The most important annual event in Rio - and up there with the largest street parties in the world - Rio Carnaval is one not to miss (either in February or March). The Brazilian spirit truly encapsulates the city with a kaleidoscope of colour, music and dance. Spend your days exploring the samba street parties and elaborate float parades, and your evenings with a Caipirinha cocktail and spectacular views overlooking the city.
Brazil’s Green Coast (or Costa Verde) offers the chance to relax and rejuvenate following a stay in vibrant Rio or hectic Sao Paolo. Just west of Rio is the charming town of Paraty, brimming with its cobbled streets and colonial architecture. Just a short boat ride away from there is the laid-back island of Ilha Grande, offering nothing but beautiful beaches, lush rainforest and diverse wildlife. Honeymooners will relish the golden sands of Búzios – a sophisticated peninsula with over 20 pearlescent beaches, boutique hotels and fabulous shopping and dining.
Home to the world’s largest tropical rainforest and the most diverse ecosystem on the planet, a stay in the Amazon Rainforest will be a highlight of any Brazilian holiday. There are two main ways to explore the Amazon and its variety of wildlife and rich biodiversity; stay a few nights in a jungle lodge or explore the winding channels on an Amazon river cruise.
The vast wetlands of the Pantanal are undoubtedly the best destination for wildlife viewing in Brazil; covering over 70,000 square miles, they are the largest wetlands in the world and home to a vast array of mammals, reptiles and tropical birds including jaguars, caimans and macaws to name but a few.
Witness the drama of the magnificent Iguazú Falls, one of the greatest natural wonders in South America. There are 275 individual waterfalls which sit on the border of Brazil and Argentina in a magnificent rainforest setting, all offering endless photo opportunities, breath-taking views and a number of trails to explore.
