JAW-DROPPING FJORDS & DAZZLING NORTHERN LIGHTS
A trip to Norway should probably begin with an exploration of the fjords - Norway's unique and most astonishing attraction. Stretching hundreds of miles from the striking coast to the pristine inland regions, their still, deep waters are fringed with picture-book settlements and backed by a breathtaking landscape of forests, glaciers and snow-capped peaks. Jumping off from the historic Hanseatic town of Bergen, explore the fjords by Hurtigruten cruise or local ferry, by car, train – or a combination of all three! One train journey you must take in Norway is the Flam Railway - one of the most scenic and beautiful train journeys in the world (and also the steepest).
Located in the south-western corner of the country, Stavanger is a small, intimate city with a fascinating history and pleasant harbour front. Outside of the city, the main attractions for this region are cruises to the picturesque Lysefjord, home to the iconic ‘Pulpit Rock’ as well as the lesser-known ‘Flor & Fjaere’ island.
Further north and considered the most beautiful fjord in the world, the Geirangerfjord will take your breath away with its peaceful waters, majestic mountains, amazing flora and magnificent waterfalls, including the Seven Sisters and Bridal Veil.
The oldest of the Scandinavian capital cities, Oslo is a blend of modern style and traditional charm. Appealing architecture, spacious streets, picturesque squares and numerous cafes and restaurants give Oslo a very pleasant atmosphere. Situated at the head of a 100km long fjord, the city is surrounded by enormous dense forests.
Tromsø is known as ‘the capital of the Arctic’, and just so happens to be one of the best places in the world to view the ‘Aurora Borealis’, otherwise known as the Northern Lights. This small city is effortlessly charming and makes for pretty viewing in the daytime too. The city is well set up for aurora borealis hunters, running ‘northern lights safaris’ to spots free of light pollution and also provides a perfect base to visit cultural attractions or maybe try one of the many optional excursions available, from dog sledging to snowmobiling.
Trolltunga is one of Europe’s most scenic hikes and is well worth the 700m climb. Head up on this challenging hike past waterfalls, mountain ridges and lush greenery before reaching the Troll’s Tongue from which you can enjoy the incredible views over the Hardangerfjord.
