JAW-DROPPING SCENERY AT EVERY TURN
In the northern stretch of the island, you’ll find a huge number of wineries in the Marlborough Region, making wine tours a must-do. To the west sits Abel Tasman National Park – a remote and picturesque wilderness reserve with deserted golden beaches and secluded coves offering perfect pit stops during an unforgettable hike.
The West Coast offers yet more rugged natural perfection and scenery to take your breath away. Wind your way down the coastal road with brief but memorable stops in the charming towns of Punakaiki, Greymouth and Hokitika. Further down, the Franz Josef Glacier and Fox Glacier; two of New Zealand’s most imposing natural wonders, and some of the most impressive and accessible glaciers in the world.
Be sure to visit Mount Cook (Aoraki, in Maori), the highest mountain in New Zealand. This glorious mountain dominates the spectacular Southern Alps and can be best seen from the milky turquoise waters of Lake Pukaki. On the shores of stunning Lake Tekapo, you’ll find the beautiful Church of the Good Shepherd, one of the most popular photo spots in New Zealand and a superb frame for the Southern Alps backdrop beyond.
The city of Queenstown is the ‘adventure capital of the world’ and is one of the most popular places to visit in New Zealand. It’s famous for its mesmerising Middle Earth scenery and exhilarating adventure sports; you can go sky diving, bungee jumping or face the heart-stopping Shotover Canyon Swing – the world's highest cliff jump. It is also a great base to explore the lakeside town of Wanaka (known for its amazing hikes) and the dramatic landscape of Milford Sound in neighbouring Fiordland.
For a chance to ride on one of the most picturesque railway journeys in the world; jump aboard the TranzApline Railway (one of our Top 10 Railway Trips). Experience the full breadth of the South Islands natural landscape between Greymouth and Christchurch as you roll through river valleys, forests and the towering peaks of the Southern Alps.

One of our favourite hikes was Roy’s Peak near the tranquil lakeside town of Wanaka. It was a steady 5-hour uphill climb which rewards you with nothing but epic views overlooking Lake Wanaka and the surrounding peaks, including Mount Aspiring. Make sure you pack a lunch as you will want to spend some time at the top!
