Holidays to Melbourne offer chic boutiques, trendy eateries and cutting-edge culture. To uncover the city’s best-kept secrets head to the Laneways, where hours can be spent discovering vintage and designer boutiques. Historic architecture can be seen at the iconic Flinders Street Station and Queen Victoria Market which contrast nicely with the unique and modern structures of Federation Square. Across the Yarra River, Southbank is home to the National Gallery, the towering Eureka Skydeck and boasts many options for waterside dining.
Melbourne also has a lot to offer for families, with 20th Century amusement rides at Luna Park, and fantastic beaches in St. Kilda and neighbouring Brighton.
Many of Australia’s major sporting events take part in Melbourne with modern stadiums within walking distance to the city’s Central Business District, meaning spectators can easily enjoy the best of Melbourne and the best of sport in one day.
Every four years, England’s Barmy Army descend on the colossal Melbourne Cricket Ground or MCG for the traditional Boxing Day Test Match, whereas motorsports enthusiasts arrive in March for Formula 1’s curtain-raiser at Albert Park. Head to Melbourne Park in January for the first tennis major of the season - the Australian Open, located just across the train tracks from the MCG which coincidentally also hosts AFL matches throughout the Australian winter.
A short drive from the city will have you exploring the rolling hills of the Yarra Valley – Victoria’s premier wine destination renowned for its Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Home to over 80 vineyards, from renowned international wineries to rustic local cellar doors; it is the perfect setting for a gourmet lunch and some of the most delicious wines in Australia.
Of course, no holiday to Melbourne would be complete without a drive along the breathtaking coastline that makes up the Great Ocean Road. Regarded as one of the world’s most scenic coastal drives, roadtrippers can discover hidden beaches, ancient rainforest and charming surf towns before reaching the sheer limestone cliffs of the Twelve Apostles.
We spent a couple of nights in the picturesque seaside town of Sorrento. Located on the Mornington Peninsula, the pace of life here is a lot slower than the city, with gorgeous beaches, crystal clear waters and a number of delightful shops and restaurants.
