The state capital Brisbane is home to endless street cafés and restaurants, with historic and modern architecture in abundance. The vibrant Southbank is strangely reminiscent to London’s own Southbank, with a National Gallery and striking Ferris Wheel - the only obvious difference being the free open-air lagoon pool which is fantastic for the family.
Australia’s premier holiday destination, the Gold Coast offers sweeping white sand beaches and a host of fun attractions. Stay in Surfers Paradise which (as you guessed it) is a haven for surfers all around the world, or for a quieter alternative, choose upmarket Broadwater or laid-back Coolangatta. The Gold Coast also hosts a number of fantastic theme parks where families can enjoy high-speed thrills and spills.
As you work your way north up the Queensland coast, make sure you stop off at the magnificent Australia Zoo – founded by legendary crocodile hunter Steve Irwin. Walk amongst wallabies and kangaroos, hug a koala bear and check out a fascinating crocodile show up close, as well as a plethora of other exotic wildlife, unique only to this land.
A highlight to most Australia itineraries is a trip to Fraser Island - the world’s largest sand island and a World Heritage Listed wonder where tropical rainforest meets sandy beaches and freshwater lakes. You can experience its highlights on a day tour from nearby Hervey Bay which also offers incredible whale watching opportunities. The upmarket seaside resort of Noosa Heads is renowned for its stunning main beach, alfresco cafés, eclectic boutiques and top restaurants.
Brisbane is rare in that it offers so many free services for locals and visitors alike. None more memorable than the Cityhopper Ferry as it meanders along the Brisbane River with stunning views of the city skyline. It is a fabulous way to explore this fabulous city!
